The Georgian Bay General Hospital Foundation (GBGHF) raises funds for Georgian Bay General Hospital because the Ontario government does not pay for equipment for hospitals. They rely on community donations to fund critical equipment and technology so that the physicians and staff can provide the best care.

In the Emergency Department at GBGH, the physicians rely on a portable ultrasound to make critical diagnoses at the bedside. The images captured with this simple, radiation-free technology provides a wealth of information about internal organs, tissues and vessels. It is used to identify gall stones, retinal detachment, water in the lungs, congestive heart failure, inflammation in the joints or around the organs, skin infections or abscesses, ectopic pregnancies and blood clots. It also plays a critical role in assessing someone who has been involved in a serious trauma, identifying internal bleeding without having to transfer the patient to our imaging department. They cannot provide exceptional care without it.
A new portable ultrasound unit will cost $70,000 and GBGHF needs our help to bring this updated technology to our hospital.
Our $22,500 donation was presented to GBGH staff on May 1st, 2019.
In a very short campaign outside of their regular fundraising efforts, the Guys responded with outstanding generosity to a $20,000 matching gauntlet thrown down by Mike Thor and James Layter. “We wanted to do something special for GBGH to give the MRI campaign a boost, and still be able to support another deserving charity in October,” said Mike Thor, one of the founders of the Guys organization..“James Layter and I decided to challenge the Guys by offering a joint match gift [$10,000 each, up to a total of $20,000] for all donations before our meeting on the 23rd.”
The result was a cheque to GBGH Foundation for $46,000 presented at the event. “Given the importance of bringing an MRI to GBGH, we are thrilled to receive this gift from the Guys Who Care in North Simcoe,” Matthew Lawson, President and CEO, GBGH told the meeting. “We have been overwhelmed with support from this community. It has been going faster than anticipated, which has allowed us to continue to move at a rapid pace in getting this expansion built and MRI up and going.”
